A blue whale - the largest creature on the planet - was also spotted, but a rarer sight was a whale shark - the largest fish species on the planet - far north of its typical range.

“I always say: you never know what you will see there, and today it was proven! a San Diego Whale Watch representative wrote on Facebook. “We not only found hundreds of long-beaked common dolphins, but also a blue whale, two moonfish and a WHALE SHARK!”

Whale sharks, filter feeders (aquatic animals that feed on small floating organisms or organic debris by filtering them out of the water), which can be up to 12 m long, live in tropical waters around the world, including Mexico and Hawaii.

Sightings of these species off the coast of Southern California are extremely rare.

But hot weather and light winds have resulted in unusually high sea surface temperatures, attracting exotic species such as dorado or mahi mahi and at least one whale shark.

Blue whales, which can be up to 30 meters long and weigh more than 150 tons, feed off the coast of California every summer.

The whale shark, which greeted passengers and crew members of the San Diego whale watching service, swam alongside the boat, allowing it to be viewed and photographed.
