Three Ukrainian activists will study at Stanford
Since January of this year, 340 Ukrainians have applied for a grant program to study at the Center for Democracy, Development and Rule of Law at Stanford University (CDDRL).
Three of them passed a tough selection and received the right to go to study overseas. Now these three are Alexander Starodubtsev, one of the founders of the public procurement system Prozorro, Alexandra Matviychuk, coordinator of the public initiative “Euromaidan SOS”, and Dmitry Romanovich, adviser on deregulation at the Ministry of Economic Development, will go to a leading university in the world for 10 months.
Starodubtsev, Matviychuk and Romanovich were selected due to their contribution to the political development of Ukraine, leadership potential and strong proposals for design work. At Stanford they will conduct classes, get advice from academic mentors and work on their projects.
Starodubtsev plans to focus on expanding the model Prozorro for global use and improvement of their human resource management skills to promote public administration in the government of Ukraine.
Matviychuk will continue to work in the field of human rights. Her goal is to use the remaining energy from the Revolution of Dignity to create a network of volunteers who will work to create sustainable reforms and institutions in Ukraine.
Romanovich intends to study Western experience and subsequently create a roadmap for future reforms in Ukraine.
Ukrainians agree that the most urgent need of the country is to increase confidence in political institutions. Romanovich noted that society is active, but there is still a need for a strong political will to transform the energy of the masses into effective reforms.
CDDRL director, political analyst Francis Fukuyama stated that it is impossible to carry out a democratic revolution in Ukraine without educating a whole generation of reformers who want to live in a different society.
For each student from Ukraine, a scholarship of $ 70 thousand, which will be used for room and board, is assigned to all students from Ukraine. In addition, sponsors pay various organizational costs.
Participants in the program must fulfill only one condition - return to their homeland and, with the help of the acquired knowledge, take on the modernization of the state.
