Trump softened the punishment of a woman serving a life sentence for drugs

Johnson, 63, has spent more than 21 years in federal prison after being convicted of participating in a drug trafficking conspiracy and would have died in prison if the president had not commuted her sentence so she can now go home.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union, Johnson is one of thousands of Americans serving life sentences for non-violent crimes, most of whom are punished with drugs.

“Ms Johnson has accepted responsibility for her past behavior and has been a model prisoner for the past two decades. While this administration will always be tough on criminals, it believes that those who have paid their debt to society and worked hard to better themselves while in prison deserve a second chance,” the White House said in a statement. .

Kardashian met with Trump 30 May to talk about penitentiary reform and possible pardon for Johnson.

The prisoner’s daughter said that the news that she could leave the prison raised her spirits and improved her mother’s physical condition. She noted that relatives are planning to take the woman home as soon as possible, and also expressed gratitude for the efforts of Kardashian and Trump's mercy, which "saved her mother's life."

Kardashian also thanked the president in her microblog Twitter, calling the sentence commutation information “great news.”

The American Civil Liberties Union thanked the head of state and called for a review of other overly harsh sentences that are being served by Americans who have committed non-violent crimes.

According to the official representative of the White House, dozens of petitions for clemency were filed with Trump, and the president deals with them.

Mitigation of punishment (a process that was applied to Johnson) reduces the term or cancels imprisonment, but does not change the fact of conviction and does not restore certain civil liberties that the convicted person is deprived of.
