In 2017, US special prosecutor Robert Muller, who is conducting an investigation into the influence attributed by the Russian Federation to the elections, accused Manafort, and they were not related to his participation in the election campaign, but related to the period of his work in the interests of the government of Ukraine, the Party of Regions and President Viktor Yanukovych.

US intelligence agencies believe that Russia intervened in the US election process in 2016. Investigations to this effect continue to lead the FBI, the Senate Intelligence Special Committee, as well as the apparatus of Muller. Trump and his closest aides repeatedly denied all allegations of any inappropriate contact with Russian officials during the 2016 campaign year.
