Trump: US midterm elections are 'a stunning success'
President Trump called the mid-term elections "a huge success," because the Republicans retained their majority in the Senate, but lost control of the House of Representatives for the first time in eight years.
“A huge success tonight. Thank you everyone!” Trump tweeted, choosing to focus on the Senate results.
Now Republicans will be able to retain control over all critical federal judicial appointments, including the candidate to the Supreme Court.
The prospects for Democrats in the Senate were dealt a big blow in Indiana, where Republican businessman Mike Bron defeated the current Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly.
In Tennessee, Democrat Phil Bredesen, the former state governor, lost to Republican Marché Blackburn in the fight for the place of retiring Senator Bob Corker. Blackburn will be the first woman senator from Tennessee. In Missouri, Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskil, who has served two terms in the House, lost to State Attorney Josh Hawley.
But the Democrats will control the House of Representatives, and this gives hope to the liberals to continue investigating Russia's interference in the presidential election, and even submit articles about impeachment against the president. Democrats will also be able to reject many of the items on Trump's legislative agenda, funding the wall on the border with Mexico, and the new tax cuts for the middle class.
Trump traveled around the country for a week, where he held rallies with his election slogan “Make America Great Again”. He campaigned for Republicans in an attempt to save a large part in the House of Representatives and the Senate. On Monday, he ended the campaign before the mid-term elections with three rallies. In total, since October, he held 26 rallies.
