Many migrants, stopped at the border of Guatemala and Mexico, crossed it by swimming or on self-made rafts.

Attracting a lot of attention to the caravan, which set off from Honduras, was stopped by the Mexican authorities on the bridge on the border with Guatemala, but many crossed the water or on homemade rafts.

The US Department of Homeland Security, which is monitoring the caravan, warned of the danger of its participants being threatened by criminals.

“We are closely following the crisis (associated) with the caravan, but we must remember transnational criminal organizations and other criminals who want to take advantage of the vulnerability of those who have recovered from this illegal migration trip,” said Kirsten Nielsen on Sunday.

She noted that the US will cooperate with regional partners "to investigate and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law, anyone who tries to encourage and benefit from illegal migration."

The Red Cross issued a statement in which it noted that many participants in the caravan "are suffering from dehydration, gastric infections and leg injuries during their long journey."

Walter Kotte, Regional Director of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Society, said: "It is imperative that the dignity and safety of families be protected and kept together."

The caravan, consisting of approximately 3 of thousands of people, left the city of San Pedro Sula in Honduras a few days ago, passed through the jungles of Guatemala and residential areas, reaching Mexico in the hope of finally reaching the United States.

US President Donald Trump said that the caravan must stop before it reaches the United States. Trump turned the caravan from migrants into a political issue at the November midterm elections to Congress, threatening to stop providing assistance to countries in the region, to close the border with Mexico and to deploy troops at the border if Mexico does not stop the movement of migrants.

Mexico did not allow the mass passage of people across the bridge and instead accepted small groups of people for processing. To cross the border, you must present a passport or visa or apply for refugee status.

The Mexican government turned to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for assistance in processing the applications of migrants applying for refugee status, which may help Mexico City to disperse the caravan.

Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray said in an interview with Televisa media company that those who want to apply for asylum in Mexico can do it “if they have a vulnerable situation in their country of origin”.

The majority of migrants are residents of Honduras, who explain the desire to leave the country indigent poverty and violence from gangs. Honduras is one of the leaders in the number of murders per capita in the world.

“You can’t live there,” Fidelina Vasquez, a grandmother who traveled with her daughter and two-year-old grandson, told The Associated Press.

After an emergency meeting in Guatemala, the presidents of Honduras and Guatemala reported that about 5400 migrants entered Guatemala after announcing the formation of a caravan a week ago. About two thousand voluntarily returned to Honduras.
