Technical issues and misinformation: some polling stations haven't opened yet
Some voters faced problems with electoral machines and infrastructure on election day. But this did not affect the turnout, which is expected to be historic. Details told the publication NBC News.
Special attention is paid to key states such as Georgia, Ohio and Pennsylvania, where the fate of the race between President Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Joe Biden will be decided.
“I thought we should get here early,” said Becca McCormick, 35, as she waited in a 100-person line shortly before 07 a.m. in Roxboro, Philadelphia. “But it turns out that everyone else decided so too.”
Waiting times in queues near polling stations are reported to be two to four hours or more in parts of Alabama, Ohio and Florida, with no queues at all in some other regions.
In Fulton County, Georgia, wait times on Tuesday afternoon lasted no more than 10 minutes, and there were no queues at all in the vast majority of polling stations.
Technical problems
In the faltering state of North Carolina, several polling stations reported technical problems shortly after opening.
Voters in Franklin, Ohio and Spaulding, Georgia counties used paper-only ballots after technical failures with voting machines. The problems in Spaulding County were resolved later on November 3.
In addition, voting machines in James City County, Virginia, rejected some ballots after the disinfectant used to wipe the machines caused technical problems. Employees of the election commission urgently installed a ballot box in which paper ballots could be stored. It was also decided to reduce the number of wipes on the machines and the amount of disinfectant applied to them.
Despite fears of violence and unrest at polling stations on election day, officials ensured that the country's voting infrastructure remains safe from burglaries and other threats.
“We face many threats of foreign interference in our election infrastructure,” acting Department of Homeland Security chief Chad Wolf told reporters. “We know that our foreign adversaries, including China, Iran and Russia, are eager to manipulate our democratic process to their advantage.” But let me be clear: Our election infrastructure is robust, and we have no indication that anyone was able to compromise or influence the actual number of votes in this election.”
Several counties in Nevada have yet to open due to technical issues at the time of writing, the state election department's official Twitter channel said. Nevada Elections.
“Several polling places in Clark County are experiencing technical issues and have not yet opened. If you are waiting in line, please be patient. They will open soon,” the message says.
Disinformation
Also on Tuesday, November 3, there were reports of voter disinformation in the morning.
In Michigan, Attorney General Dana Nessel tweeted that her office received reports of several automatic calls to residents of Flint. They were told that because of the long queues they had to come to vote on Wednesday, November 4th.
Nessel also wrote that voters in Dearborn, a town near Detroit, received false text messages saying there were problems with voting machines at polling stations.
The FBI said it is investigating mysterious automated phone calls with fake information that have been recorded in several states. Voters were told to "stay at home to be safe."
Meanwhile, voters in Pennsylvania were victims of online fraud, receiving misleading videos and photos from polling places.
Election officials say election integrity and outcomes are particularly important, with a record nearly 100 million votes cast through early voting, already about 75% of all votes cast in the 2016 election.
