The death toll in the attack on the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh increased to 11 people. The man who opened fire on the parishioners of the synagogue, according to KDKA sources, committed a "hate crime": breaking into the building where the service was held, he shouted: "All Jews must die."

After law enforcement officers arrived at the scene of the incident, the man, according to the local channel, started shooting at them. The police were forced to use cars as shields. Six people were injured as a result of the incident, including four police officers, the AP notes.

The incident occurred in the Squirrel Hill area - at that time there were many visitors to the synagogue. As correspondents from the local TV channel KDKA reported, people barricaded themselves in the synagogue building called the police. The police who arrived at the crime scene had to hide behind cars.

People were taken out of the building in groups, students of the university, located in the neighborhood, sent text messages with a request to remain in the building.

The city authorities and police warned local residents about active shooting and urged not to leave their homes.

Half an hour ago it became known that the shooter surrendered to the police after an exchange of fire with officers. According to information at the moment, the suspect was also injured.

Moscow's comsomolets writes that the shooter's name is Robert Bowers, he was armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle. According to eyewitnesses, the shooter shouted: “These Jews must die!”

The mayor Bill Peduto arrived at the scene.
