The United States returned to Russia the consular archives from San Francisco

The United States authorities independently removed the inviolable consular archive from the building of the Russian Consulate General in San Francisco and transferred it to the Russian Embassy in Washington on October 23, despite repeated protests from Russia, they told the publication “Interfax"at the Russian Embassy in the USA.

“The American authorities never provided us with access to the building of the Russian Consulate General in San Francisco, which was closed by their decision on September 2, in order to remove the consular archive. Instead, they packed it themselves and shipped it to Washington. This was done despite repeated protests from the Russian Foreign Ministry and the Embassy. On October 23, the archive was transferred to the Embassy,” the Russian diplomatic mission said in a statement.

The Embassy emphasized that “consular archives and documents are inviolable at any time and regardless of their location.”

“By its actions, the American side has once again grossly violated the relevant provisions of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and the Bilateral Consular Convention,” the statement said.

The embassy also emphasized that “the disdainful attitude of official Washington towards international law, Russian diplomatic and consular facilities and property has opened up the possibility of similar treatment of US missions in Russia.”

“According to the principle of reciprocity on which diplomatic relations are based,” the diplomatic mission added.

The tacit confrontation between Russia and the United States began in December last year, when the administration of US President Barack Obama imposed sanctions against 9 Russian institutions, companies and individuals, including against the GRU and the FSB, for “interfering in elections and putting pressure on American diplomats” working in Russia.
