US suspended the duty-free import of Ukrainian goods 155

26 April The office of the US sales representative suspended the duty-free importation of goods produced in Ukraine for 155.

This is stated in communication on the website of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine.

There is a Generalized System of Preferences between Kiev and Washington, under which more than 3 500 types of Ukrainian goods can be imported into the United States without a fee. At the end of April, 155 names were excluded from this system, including food products, light goods, woodworking industry, mechanical engineering and some electrical appliances.

Products that have fallen under the restrictions include packaged tea, nuts, cucumbers, ketchup, jam, non-alcoholic beer, mineral water, musical electronic instruments, telescopes and much more.

The Economic Development and Trade Ministry said that “they are in constant dialogue with the US government and are working to solve the problem,” adding that lifting the restrictions imposed on Ukrainian goods depends on whether the Verkhovna Rada accepts the draft law “On the organization of collective management.” It aims to establish in the country "an effective and transparent system of collective management of property rights", including copyright.

The generalized system of preferences between Ukraine and the United States has been in effect since July 2015 of the year, initially the list of goods that could be imported into the United States duty free was about five thousand items. In December, 2017, US President Donald Trump suspended the effect of the duty-free regime in relation to some Ukrainian goods, citing the fact that Kiev does not provide a sufficient level of intellectual property protection.
