US plans to deploy new nuclear weapons in Europe
The United States plans to deploy modernized B61-12 nuclear bombs in Europe that can be used by the German Air Force Tornado planes, German media reported.
From the US military budget from the third quarter of 2015, funds are allocated for the adaptation of these munitions for German aviation.
Aircraft Bundesluftwaffe, as noted by the German television channel ZDF, regularly make training flights with simulators of American nuclear bombs, training in case of their possible use. It is known that in addition to the German Air Force, pilots of some other NATO member countries, including Great Britain and Belgium, have been trained since the times of the Cold War.
In March, 2010, the Bundestag ruled that the federal government should insist on the withdrawal of US nuclear bombs from German territory. The coalition agreement of the CDU and FDP parties, concluded after the elections in 2009, provided for the withdrawal of nuclear weapons from the Büchel airbase, but this did not happen.
According to experts, there are currently about ten to twenty American atomic warheads at the air base near Büchel since the Cold War. Bombs like B61-12 are significantly more accurate than weapons currently stored in Büchel.
