A Walmart employee said that a customer is obliged to speak in English, “because this is Texas”
A Houston resident claimed to be threatened with physical harm after he posted a video on Facebook that recorded his conversation with a Walmart employee, who told him that he was obliged to speak English at the store, “because they are in Texas.”
Joel Aparizio ran into problems with a self-service automatic at Walmart in Pasadena (TX). He asked the store employee if she spoke Spanish to explain the situation to her, but she answered negatively, writes The New York Post.
The employee solved the problem, but as soon as she left, the problems started again. An employee of the network returned to Aparitsio and stated that he should not be in the United States if he could not speak English.
At this point, the man began to record the conversation, asking the employee if there was a need to speak English inside the store.
“Yes, because we are in Texas,” the employee replied.
“Only because of this?” Aparizio clarified.
The employee several times insisted that the man spoke in English.
“I don’t know how you’re going to pay,” the woman said, pointing to the cash register.
Aparizio drew attention to the fact that the employee looked like a person who speaks not only English, but she said: "I live in Texas, so I speak English."
In this case, the woman answered in English to his questions in Spanish, which indicates that she most likely understands Spanish.
Aparizio is a native of El Salvador who has lived in Houston for about 13 years. He said he has been going to this Walmart for 10 years.
“No one has ever treated me like this in this store before. They were always friendly,” he said.
Under the video published by the man posted the threat of harming him physically. Presumably she came from the grandson of an employee with whom he spoke in the store.
Some commentators advised the man to still learn English, while others suggested that he must have been rude to a woman because, according to some clients, she speaks both English and Spanish.
Some have emphasized that one cannot blame a person for racism just because he answers in English to your questions asked in Spanish.
At the same time, there were those who accused Aparacio of everything, saying that the conflict provoked his refusal to assimilate into the society in which he lives.
Aparitsio said that he had informed the police about the threats against him.
In Walmart said they will deal with the incident within the network.
