CNN learned about Trump's plans to make a deal with Putin over Syria

Trump would like to reach an agreement with Putin at a meeting in Helsinki on a settlement in Syria, thereby accelerating the withdrawal of US forces from that country. To this end, he proposes to give Damascus some of the territories remaining under the control of the opposition.

Donald Trump intends to discuss Syria with him during a meeting with Putin in Helsinki, including offering him a deal that will speed up the withdrawal of American troops from the conflict zone. He writes about it RBC with reference to CNN's diplomatic sources.

According to CNN interlocutors, the deal concerns the southwestern regions of Syria along the Jordanian border, where the army of Bashar al-Assad continues its offensive against the US-supported rebels. Trump proposes to transfer these territories to the Syrian authorities with the support of Russia on the condition of granting the right to an unimpeded exit of opposition forces to other regions. In addition, Trump insists on creating an exclusion zone in southwest Syria, which would rule out direct opposition clashes with the Syrian army.

A similar plan was applied earlier during the fighting for the city of Duma in the suburbs of Damascus. Then the Syrian authorities got the Duma under their control. Before that, they ensured that the militants who remained there were leaving the surrounded area. As stated by Major-General Yuri Yevtushenko, head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Warring Parties in Syria, in April, about 67 thousands of militants and their families were evacuated from the Eastern Guta area.

The possibility of transferring territories in the south-west of Syria, Trump had time to discuss with King Jordan Abdullah II, who visited the White House.

Active fighting in the south-west of Syria has been going on for several weeks. Earlier, the US authorities promised to take "tough measures" against Damascus, if the Syrian forces did not stop the offensive.
