Media: Johnson invited Zelensky to create an alternative alliance to the European Union
Some media, citing a source, reported that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson proposed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to create a new alliance, an alternative to the EU, which the Baltic countries could also join. Writes about it LRT.
In addition to Great Britain and Ukraine, this union could include Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and, possibly, Turkey.
Johnson believes that the motives of the members of the alliance will be distrust of Brussels and disappointment with Berlin's reaction to Russian aggression, united by enthusiasm for national sovereignty, a liberal market economy and an unambiguous assessment of the military threat posed by Moscow.
According to Corriere della Sera sources, Johnson presented his position to Zelensky during their meeting in Kyiv on April 9. Then the official Kyiv did not express any position on this matter.
According to the publication, Zelensky is looking forward to the EU summit on June 23, at which European leaders can decide on granting Ukraine candidate status and begin formal negotiations on the country's EU membership. However, if a more abstract “European perspective” formula is presented to Ukraine, Zelensky may consider Johnson’s proposals more seriously.

Whether Poland and the Baltic states would agree to such an alliance is also unclear.
No offer yet
Lithuania has not yet received a concrete proposal on British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's idea of an alternative union, Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said.
However, Lithuania's top diplomat stressed the need to strengthen existing alliances.
“We have not seen any specific proposals. We have no idea what its content is, how real and serious it is,” Landsbergis said.

“But, nevertheless, it is necessary to strengthen NATO, to solve the dilemmas that we face, for example, the Turkish veto, not to close the door, not to deny Ukraine and other countries the opportunity to join NATO - this is the most serious guarantee of security in the future. While Ukraine can join NATO, we need to help Ukraine join NATO, and then develop the armed forces and defense system that meet NATO standards,” he said.
Landsbergis believes these are realistic goals.
