How much do American pensioners spend on their health?
A couple at the age of 65 years after retirement will have to pay $ 280 thousand per year for medical care, which is 2% more than last year and 75% more than in 2002 year, writes USA Today citing data from Fidelity Benefits Consulting.
If a couple retires at the age of 65, they can get insurance Medicare. Men will have to spend on health care $ 133 thousand, and women $ 147 thousand, because according to statistics, women live longer than men.
“Covering healthcare costs remains one of the most significant and unpredictable aspects of retirement planning. It is important for working people to learn to take into account these costs that will certainly arise in the future. Otherwise, they risk spending more of their savings than originally planned,” said Shams Talim, executive vice president and head of Fidelity Benefits Consulting.
People who retire early may spend even more on health. So Fidelity 1000 interviewed people between the ages of 50 and 65 years who retired during the last three years, and found out that, despite having health insurance, they spent 36% or 500 dollars per month on medical expenses.
When asked how early retirees cover expenses, 49% said through personal savings, 24% through Social Security and 15% through retirement savings.
