Illegal farmers in California want to be given a green card and citizenship
Two senators from the California Democratic Party filed a bill to 3 in May designed to protect farmers who are in the country illegally from deportation. It also offers the possibility of obtaining citizenship for farmers.
“Everywhere I travel in California, farmers and producers in all areas of agriculture, especially wine, citrus, fruits and nuts, complain about the lack of workers. Farm labor relies almost exclusively on undocumented immigrants. This won’t surprise anyone,” says Senator Dianne Feinstein.
9 of 10 agricultural workers in California are foreigners. More than half of them are not documented. Farmers cannot hire local workers, even with wage increases.
The bill was also supported by senators from the states of Colorado, Vermont and Hawaii. However, the matter is not actively discussed in Congress. It does not help the situation and the fact that the Democratic Party is now in the minority.
The bill could allow farmers who are staying in the country illegally, but working in agriculture for at least 100 days for each of the last two years, to get blue card. This document will mean the right to work legally. As a result, the employee could have the right to receive green cards and citizenship.
