Democratic senators demand to disclose details of the meeting between Putin and Trump

Democratic senators from the Foreign Affairs Committee turned to by letter to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo with a request to provide them with detailed materials on the meeting of US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which took place on July 16 in Helsinki.

Senators are interested in what the politicians talked about during the two-hour conversation behind the closed door in the presence of only translators, writes RBC.

The senators ask Pompeo to provide them with all the documents related to this meeting: secret and non-secret records, interpreter notes, memorandums of negotiations and directives related to this summit.

According to the senators, the Russian side can spread false information about what happened at the meeting behind closed doors.

“The situation requires urgent Senate supervision, especially in the light of the potential promises of the United States made at this meeting, as well as to understand and counter any Russian disinformation associated with this meeting. For the performance of supervisory functions, the committee should have access to these materials, ”the letter of the committee’s representatives says.

Earlier, Trump was criticized by Democratic leaders and Republicans in Congress. Some of the congressmen demanded to call a translator to the Senate, who was in a closed meeting, so that he would talk about what the two heads of state were discussing. However, this idea was blocked. State Department spokesman Heather Neuert said she could not find a precedent when a translator was called to testify.

Recall Trump-Putin meeting held in Helsinki on July 16. The first part of the negotiations was held in private with the participation of the presidents themselves and their translators.
