SpaceX President: How is it - to work for Ilona Mask

Gwynn Shotwell says it's hard, but it also inspires.

Shotwell joined the company in 2002 year as an employee No. 7.

“I love working for Elon. This year will be 16 years that I’ve been working for him,” Shotwell told TED in April.

“I don’t think I’m so stupid that I did something for 16 years that I didn’t like to do. He's funny and principled, and he makes you do your job well. He doesn't need to say anything for this. You just want to do a good job,” Shotwell says.

According to her, he pushes the team to work on ambitious schedules.

“No doubt, Elon is very aggressive with his deadlines, but honestly, it forces us to do everything better and faster. I think that all the time and all the money in the world will not give the best solution, so it is very important to put pressure on the team to work faster,” the woman says.

But when Musk first voiced goals, Shotville said that she listens and thinks before answering.

“First of all, when Elon says something, you need to pause and not immediately say: “Well, that’s impossible” or “We won’t do that. I do not know how". So you should be quiet, think and find ways to do it,” says Shotwell.

She, too, had to get used to this manner, since working in SpaceX will never be easy.

“I always felt like my job was to take his ideas and turn them into company goals, make them achievable and make them something that people could relate to,” she says.

“I noticed that every time Elon came up with an idea again and we became uncomfortable again, it was like we were going up a steep slope,” she explains.

“But then, when I realized that this was his job, and my task was to bring the company closer to comfort, so that he could push us back up the slope, then I began to love my job more, and not be disappointed in it,” says Shotville.

Now a woman fantasizes even more boss.

Musk publicly outlined his vision for the creation of missiles that reach Mars. However, Shotville says he wants to go even further.

“I think this is the first step on our path to other solar systems and potentially other galaxies. I want to meet other people in other solar systems. Mars is good. There's a lot of work to do to make it livable. But I want to find people, or whatever they call themselves, in another solar system,” Musk’s employee shares her dreams.
