An elderly couple came to the children at a military base to mark 4 July, but was arrested by ICE

Concepcion Barrios and Margarito Silva were going to spend July 4 with their daughter and son-in-law at the Fort Drum military base in upstate New York. But their independence day ended in a federal prison after a military base reported to a couple of Mexican descent that they were in the United States without proper documents.

Silva and Barrios had previously been to several military bases in Brooklyn, Colorado and Hawaii without any problems, as their daughter Perla Silva had written on Facebook. Although the husband and wife admit that they live in the country illegally, they have valid identity cards in New York, which issue residents of the city regardless of their immigration status, writes The Washington Post. Previously, these IDs were enough to visit the bases, but this time the couple was stopped. Military police called the US border patrol, which detained the spouses.

Perla Silva was there with her 5-year-old daughter, who watched in tears as her grandmother and grandfather were picked up by ICE representatives. The woman wonders why they were stopped and arrested on this day, despite the long years of life in the country. An army spokeswoman, Julie Halpin, reported that Fort Drum official representatives have applied to the spousal group for secondary identification, since their New York cards do not have the bar codes needed to access the base. When they could not provide the necessary documents, the immigration officers were called.

The spouses were sent to the Wellesley Island Border Patrol Station and then to the Federal Buffalo Detention Center in Batavia, where they would await the hearing of the immigration court in their case. The son of a couple, Eduardo Silva, said that his parents lived in the United States for about twenty years and received a work permit from the Department of Labor in 2007.

Father, according to Eduardo, all his life all he did was work. The trip to the military base was his first holiday in many years. The daughter is most concerned about the fact that both her parents have serious health problems, and no one knows what complications can begin at any moment. The little granddaughter is very worried about the fate of their relatives.

“Now my daughter asks and asks when her grandparents will be back,” tweets Perla Silva. “How can I explain this to a child?”
