Assistant Alexa called the police during a family quarrel

A sheriff from New Mexico told that the personal assistant Alexa I called 911 during a house quarrel and thus saved the mother and child from violence.

Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel González III said that the employees who answered the 2 July call heard shouts and conversation during which the woman was threatened with a weapon.

Arriving at the scene, the police saw that Barros, who threatened to kill the woman, had barricaded himself in the couple’s house with weapons, so they called the SWAT team and the crisis management team.

Gonzalez said that Barros was taken into custody after the 6-hour standoff.

The woman had injuries on her face, but she refused treatment. Her daughter was unharmed.

Gonzalez said that smart technologies in the house seemed to trigger the 911 rescue service. He said that during a quarrel, Eduardo asked the victim if she called the sheriff.

“This matter, based on the victim's statements, prompted the smart device known as Alexa to contact law enforcement,” Gonzalez said in a statement. In the 911 call, the victim could be heard screaming “Alexa, call 911.”

The company Amazon stated that Alexa does not support calls to 911.

Whatever the device, Barros was eventually arrested on charges of illegal possession of weapons, as well as violence against a family member and his illegal retention.

“The unexpected use of this technology to contact emergency services may have saved their lives,” city sheriff Manuel Gonzalez commented on the incident.
