More than a dozen police escorted Vanessa Vega to school on Monday morning. It was the first day she went to school after the death of her father José Vega, who died with his partner in the line of duty of 2 a week ago.

William Hutchinson, a police spouse of Palm Springs, said that the officers wanted to show Vanessa that they would always support her.
“This is a very difficult time for her. We can't leave her alone. She has a new family to count on,” Hutchinson said. Officers met Vanessa at her home and escorted her to the elementary school where she is in 4th grade.

Hutchinson said that many more officers wanted to come to Vanessa, but they had to limit the number so as not to create a traffic jam because of the long line of police cars.

8-year-old Vanessa is the youngest of Vega's 8 children.
