Pizza and phone saved from suicide
Five hours of negotiations with the US police threatening suicide ended successfully thanks to the intervention of a robot sapper who delivered pizza and a phone to the suicide bomber.
California traffic police received a message that a man with a knife is standing on the overpass at San Jose and intends to jump down the highway. Law enforcement officers blocked the interstate 680 and 280 highways and spent several hours negotiating with the suicide to no avail.
The negotiations took place through a megaphone - the police did not dare to approach the armed man. After unsuccessful negotiations, they decided to bring him a phone, for which they allocated a Northrup Grumman Remotec Andros F6A robot, which, as a rule, deals with mine clearance.
“Since food delivery helps to get the desired result from people, we gave the robot a pizza along with the phone. He told the man: if he wants pizza, let him pick up the phone,” commented SWAT officer Chris Skiba.
The robot itself is equipped with video cameras, a microphone and speakers. The police had the opportunity to examine the man, his knife and his facial expressions. As a result, negotiators convinced him to drop the knife and surrender - less than an hour after the robot arrived.
