90% Potentially Hazardous Medical Workers Hid From Patients
For several years, the US Department of Veterans Affairs has not reported to the national database 90% of potentially dangerous health care workers, reports the US Court of Auditors. Writes USA TodayThe report to the national database is necessary to prevent unscrupulous doctors from crossing administrative boundaries and working in other clinics, carrying a threat to the health of patients.
The report of the supervisory commission states that the US Department of Veterans Affairs for several years concealed information about medical errors and misconduct on the part of health workers. The ministry officials also did not transfer information about problem clinicians to state medical institutions that could take licenses from such doctors.
The Chamber of Accounts revealed that in 5 hospitals only 9 medical staff provided reports from 2014 onwards. If the results are similar for all the ministry’s 150 hospitals, hundreds of doctors would be potentially dangerous. Presumably, hospitals did not report from October 2013 to March 2017.
The ministry responded to the treasury survey and promised to strengthen oversight of reporting by regional officials.
