New Zealanders built an island of sand to avoid a ban on alcohol in the New Year
A group of residents of the city of Coromandel in New Zealand built a small island out of the sand at the mouth of the river Tairoi to circumvent the ban on drinking alcohol in public places and beaches of the country.
There they decided to celebrate the New Year on the beach while drinking alcohol, writes NZ Herald.
During low tide, friends built a piece of land on the river and set a table with a bench on it. On New Year's Eve, when the water returned, they climbed onto the island, sat at the table and began to drink alcohol.
The Coromandel has a total ban on alcohol in public places, including beaches. Formally, the local residents who built the island still violated the law, as they were in the city. But other beach visitors noted that enthusiasts could be "in neutral waters."
The local sheriff said that he had never heard of such a creative thing before, adding that if he saw a group of enthusiasts, he would have joined them.
