The first case of Chinese coronavirus infection recorded in Ukraine

The first case of coronavirus infection was officially registered in Ukraine. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Health and Chief Sanitary Doctor Viktor Lyashko during briefing, writes «112 Ukraine«.

The case was recorded in the Chernivtsi region of a man who returned to Ukraine from Italy with a transplant in Romania.

“On February 26, the man was returning through the Romanian airport. Temperature screening was carried out at the Romanian airport. The man's temperature was normal. After that, he returned to the Chernivtsi region through the state border point of entry into Ukraine,” Lyashko said.

The man also had an additional temperature screening and was given a memo on self-isolation, as the man traveled to countries in which cases of coronavirus were reported.

“The man was traveling with a woman, and literally 2 days after self-isolation, the man developed symptoms that indicated that he might have coronavirus. As a result, he consulted a doctor,” the Ministry of Health noted.

After receiving a consultation from a family doctor, the man continued to follow the doctor's recommendations until the 29th. And on the night of March 1, he also had other symptoms. He called an ambulance, a special team arrived, which was determined by the health department specifically for the departure and transportation of patients with suspected coronavirus infection.

Then the patient was taken to a hospital base, which was determined by order of the Health Department of the Chernivtsi region as a location for people with suspected coronavirus. During the medical examination, biological materials were taken for research.

“First, on Sunday, March 1, testing was carried out with rapid tests for the presence of influenza A and B. After this, testing for influenza using the polymerase chain reaction method was carried out and samples were taken. They were taken to the virology laboratory at the Public Health Center,” Lyashko added.

“Before this, only 4 people in Ukraine were identified as suspected of having coronavirus. One person's suspicion was confirmed. All materials and samples were additionally transferred to the WHO virology laboratory. This is the first case registered in Ukraine, and we have started working with individuals with whom this person had contact. There are few contacts, local epidemiologists know about them all, and now they are actually working with people with whom the infected person came into contact. All others are in self-isolation mode,” the Ministry of Health concluded.

Lyashko also added that no extreme or emergency events occurred in connection with the appearance of coronavirus in Ukraine.

“We are working as normal. We have developed a further clear algorithm for what we will do when transmission of the virus within the country is detected. The government has provided clear algorithms, and we will comply with them,” he added.
