Were not relatives of the deceased: in Chicago outsiders gave consent to the death of the patient

The American hospital stopped supporting the life of one of the patients after people who were considered to be his relatives gave consent to this. Later it turned out that they were not relatives of the deceased. How could this happen?

The man in question was taken to Mercy Hospital in Chicago in April of this year after he was found unconscious. He had no clothes, his face was badly disfigured.

Chicago police identified him as Alfonso Bennett, and in May, doctors contacted the patient’s relatives.

He died after they agreed to be disconnected from life support systems.

After the man’s death, the real Alfonso Bennett returned to the city: it turned out that the deceased patient was not him.

The police took the fingerprints of the deceased and discovered that in fact it was Elisha Brittman, 69-year-old. Law enforcers were able to contact his relatives.

Now both families are planning to sue the hospital management and Chicago authorities.

"I couldn't identify him"

Immediately upon arrival at the hospital, the man was registered as John Doe - this is how all patients whose identity has not yet been established are signed.

When Alfonso Bennett's relatives were notified that he was in the hospital, the brothers and sisters expressed doubt that this was him.

“I asked how they could even confirm that it was my brother. I couldn’t recognize him,” said Roge Brooks, the sister of the real Mr. Bennett.

The doctors explained that the relatives did not recognize the patient through the disfigured face and suggested that the relatives simply could not accept what had happened.

The man who was found unconscious under the car was actually named Elisha Brittman. He was 69 years old.

When they contacted his family, the relatives said that he disappeared some time ago.

"We called all the morgues, hospitals, we called everywhere," Mioshi Brittman, her husband's niece, told CBS News.

Illinois Senator Patricia Van Pelt has already said that the police had to immediately use a fingerprint or a DNA sample to establish the patient’s identity.

The head of Chicago police communications said: “To say we have questions is an understatement. There are detectives currently investigating all aspects of this incident."
