Named the most corrupt US city

Chicago (Illinois) is the second most populous city in the United States, but for several years in a row it has been ranked first in the ranking of the most corrupt large cities in the country.

A report titled “Corruption in Chicago and Illinois,” published by 11 in February at the University of Illinois at Chicago, notes that although in recent years federal convictions for corruption have declined in the US, Chicago continues to top the list in terms of the number of such sentences, writes Fox News.

“Additionally, Illinois remains the third most corrupt state per capita compared to other large states and the District of Columbia,” the report said.

The group used the most recent Department of Justice data, which indicates that during 2017, a total of 25 convictions of corruption in the Northern District of Illinois, which includes the entire city of Chicago and the state of the north, were issued. This figure declined from 30 sentences in the 2016 year; Over the past 10 years, an average of 33,6 convictions of corruption per year have been observed in this region.

In all, Illinois recorded 2017 cases of public corruption charges in 34.

Since 1976, when the Justice Department began tracking public corruption statistics, 1731 people have been convicted in the Chicago area. During the same period, 1534 people were convicted in Los Angeles, 1327 in New York, 1165 in Miami, and 1159 in Washington, DC.

“These five districts—Chicago, Los Angeles, Manhattan, Miami, and Washington, D.C.—led all 93 federal judicial districts in corruption convictions over a 47-year period since 1976,” the report said.

The state of Illinois also showed high levels of corruption in a report that measured corruption convictions per capita. During the same 47-year period, the District of Columbia had 1159 convictions (17,24 per capita), followed by Louisiana with 1 (202), Illinois with 2,57 (2), and Tennessee with 102. (1,63) and New York - 1 (015).

The political world of Chicago was shocked at the beginning of 2019, when one of the most influential members of the city council for the Democratic Party was accused of extorting a bribe from a fast food restaurant Burger King for granting permission to reconstruct the building.

Alderman Ed Burke, 75, was charged with attempted extortion for telling Burger King executives in 2017 that they would receive permits if they became clients of his property tax law firm. He faces up to 20 years in prison.
