Tension escalates: Iran knocked down American drone
The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), which is the military branch of the Iranian executive branch, reported that a US reconnaissance drone allegedly in Iranian airspace was shot down.
According to local media, the drone was shot down over the southern province of Hormozgan. This area is located near the Strait of Hormuz, which is actively used to transport oil. writes with the BBC.
The US military first refuted Iran’s statement. Central Command spokesman Bill Urban said that there were no American UAVs over Iranian territory.
But then the AP and Reuters, citing Pentagon sources, reported that the American drone was indeed shot down by the Iranians, but emphasized that it was in international airspace. A US military spokesman said the downed drone belonged to the US Navy and said it was an MQ-4C Triton drone. At the same time, Iranian media report that a drone of a different model, the RQ-4 Global Hawk, was shot down.

- The Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (SAPA), signed by Iran, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (Russia, UK, China, USA, France) and Germany in July 2015, aims to resolve the crisis around Tehran’s nuclear development. In response to the lifting of the sanctions previously imposed on Iran by the UN Security Council, the United States and the European Union, Tehran has pledged to limit its nuclear activities and put it under international control. The agreement entered the implementation phase in January 2016..
- Trump has repeatedly criticized this deal, arguing that it did not prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, but only delayed the day when Tehran would have nuclear warheads.
- Immediately after the release of this agreement, the United States began to restore the sanctions previously removed from Iran.
