14 candidates nominated for president of Belarus
The Central Election Commission of Belarus has completed the reception of documents from candidates for the presidency of the country.
All in all, 14 candidates, including the current head of state, Alexander Lukashenko, have applied for registration. Three initiative groups have already been announced registered.
We are talking, in particular, about the group that nominated Lukashenko, as well as the initiative groups of the chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party Sergei Gaidukevich and the chairman of the Belarusian Left Party “Fair World” Sergei Kalyakin.
Also vying for the post are Tatyana Korotkevich, an activist in the “Tell the Truth” educational campaign, teacher Zhanna Romanovskaya, advertising specialist Irina Pershina, and children’s teacher Tamara Biryukova.
In addition, opposition politician Anatol Lyabedzka and Nikolai Statkevich already running for the presidency, who is currently serving a prison sentence for participating in protest actions after the last election, submitted documents for registration.
The election committee is given five days to register initiative groups. After that, registered groups must collect at least 100 thousands of signatures for their candidates in less than a month. Elections themselves are scheduled for October this year's 11.
