A living chain of people was built on Lake Michigan to search for the drowned.
Lake Michigan beach visitors formed a giant human chain to help lifeguards find missing swimmers. At least six people were declared missing during the voyage due to strong winds, which led to the formation of one and a half meter waves.
The authorities quickly gathered a crowd of people, asked them to hold hands, and created several chains in the direction of the water to find victims of a weather cataclysm in the city park and the beach of Grand Haven, writes Mirror. One of the chains was able to find a live 65-year-old man from Wyoming, who was taken to hospital in critical condition.
The Grand Haven Public Health Department confirmed that several people had been pulled out of the water, all of them were taken to medical facilities. The status of the victims is not reported.
Luke Nordlund, one of the visitors and participants of the live chain, said that the chains were formed from about 30-40 people, but had to be divided into two sections, because they went too deep. It was the second chain that found the man and pulled him ashore.
Grand Haven's director of public safety, Jeff Hawk, issued a warning that visitors should not enter the lake. Previously weather warnings were published, and red prohibiting flags were set near the lake.
An employee of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said that there is a strong current along the coast within the park, as well as several sections of dangerous reverse currents. Therefore, people should not be in the water, the officer said, looking at how at least a couple dozen people bathe in the lake, jumping on the waves.
Visitor Luke Nordlund said that even with his height of almost two meters and a weight of 114 kg he could barely keep himself in an aggressive stream. Along with the people, there were also four Grand Haven public security officers, two coastal rescue boats and a coast guard patrol boat in the water.
