Hawaii has banned a number of tanning products
In Hawaii, lawmakers have banned the use of sunscreens containing chemicals that, when released into the water, contribute to the bleaching of corals, writes The New York Times.

Substances that contain oxybenzone and octinoxate are banned. The bill must be signed by the state governor. New rules will come into force on January 1 2021.
According to experts, 14 thousands of tons of sunscreen annually end up in the ocean, causing the greatest damage to coral reefs in Hawaii and the Caribbean. In 2015, the nonprofit environmental laboratory Haereticus explored the beach Trunk bay on St. John and found that the beach is visited annually by about 2000-5000 people who left on the reef about 6000 pounds of sunscreen. At the same time, about 412 pounds of cream are deposited on the reef in Hanaum Bay daily.
The state of the reefs is also adversely affected by changes in ocean temperature and wastewater discharge.
Manufacturers of traditional sunscreens opposed legislation, stating that the chemicals in question are FDA approved and vital to the prevention of skin cancer.
An alternative to banned creams can make a cream TropicSport and Raw Elements, which include mineral sunscreen materials with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The size of the molecules of chemicals should be higher than 100 nanometers, if it is lower, then the substances can penetrate into the corals, causing them harm.
