Nancy Pelosi's husband arrested for drunk driving: Republicans exploded with barbs

Pro-Trump Republicans have targeted Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California, after it was revealed on May 29 that her husband Paul Pelosi was arrested over the weekend for drunk driving in Napa County, California, reports MSN.

Paul Pelosi was arrested late on May 28.

The media reported that the arrest took place at 23:44. Paul Pelosi was later jailed at 4:13 am and then released at 7:26 am. The bail for the husband of the top Democrat in the House of Representatives was set at $5000.

“The Speaker will not comment on this personal matter that occurred while she was on the East Coast,” a Pelosi spokesman said.

Soon, a number of right-wing commentators and politicians reacted to the news by attacking Pelosi as well as criticizing her and her husband.

“How long will Paul Pelosi spend in prison? He has put many lives at risk with his reckless behavior,” author and commentator Brigitte Gabriel wrote on Twitter. “If his last name was Trump, the media would make it the number one story.”

Nick Adams, a pro-Trump writer, tweeted that "Paul Pelosi is a thug." In another post, he said, "The Pelosi crime family should come under investigation by the Trump administration."

Right-wing podcast host and commentator Mark Levine appears to have blamed Paul Pelosi's alleged drunk driving on his wife. "Can't blame him," he joked on Twitter.

"We don't know if Nancy was in the car, but from what I've heard about her, I'm guessing she was driving drunk," California Senate candidate James P. Bradley tweeted. It is noteworthy that the spokeswoman for the Speaker of the House of Representatives stated that she was not in California at the time of her arrest.

“Paul Pelosi was just arrested for drunk driving. Honestly, if you were Nancy Pelosi's husband, you'd be drunk all day, too," wrote Danny Tarkanian, Nevada's congressional candidate.

According to DrivingLaws.org, a first DUI offense carries a $390 to $1000 fine, with additional so-called "penalty charges." The final fine could be several thousand dollars. A person's license is usually suspended for six months after the first arrest for drunk driving. Those found guilty also usually face a probationary period of up to three years, although this can be extended to five years.

Paul Pelosi, 82, has been married to the Speaker of the House of Representatives since 1963. He owns Financial Leasing Services, a northern California-based real estate, venture capital and consulting firm.
