No entry to 18: what is shown in the adult museum in New York

In New York, there are probably about three hundred museums of various orientations, but today I want to tell you about the most “adult” of them - the Sex Museum, because it is also useful for parents to have fun from time to time separately from children.

Those who want to visit this museum should be at least 18 years old, although the store on the first floor is open to everyone - and, in my humble opinion, this very store is much more interesting than the exposition.

The Sex Museum relatively recently appeared on the list of New York museums, it was opened in October 2002, and is abbreviated as MoSex, which, firstly, is consistent with the famous MoMa (Museum of Modern Art) and, secondly, is phonetically similar to the phrase more sex - “more sex”).

Considering the ambiguity of the exhibitions, not every guidebook mentions this place.

However, the area in which the museum is located may itself interest the fans of New York history - it is called tenderloin in slang, which generally means cutting, but in the jargon is “an area notoriously famous.” From the 19 century, city brothels, music salons and dance clubs were concentrated here.

So, in the museum there are several floors, on the first, as I already mentioned, there is a shop, on the first minus - a bar that sells cocktails with erotic names and small cakes. They say that both food and drinks contain aphrodisiacs. For my taste, everybody lies, although, of course, someone and alcohol, and sweets also excite. In my opinion, it is very straightforward, to rudeness, but most visitors like it. Fortified and tasted erotic food, you can go for the spectacle. As in most American museums, the entrance, and exit, and ticket offices are all in one place, that is, through the store already mentioned above.

In addition to tickets ($ 18.5 on regular days and $ 19.5 on holidays, pensioners a discount of $ 2), you can also buy books, vibrators, condoms (2 times more expensive than regular stores, because everywhere there are stickers of Museum of Sex) and pretty funny, in my opinion, souvenirs - from boxes of macaroni for twenty to incredibly expensive sneakers decorated with images of male genitals.

The establishment of various expositions here came with all the scientific thoroughness - they invited psychologists, sexologists, representatives of the scientific institute for research in the field of sex (yes, there is such!), Teachers of the faculty of gender relations of the New York College, New York Historical Society and so on and so forth. Maybe that is why visiting such a museum, which seemed to me a very fun and frivolous place, turned for me 40-minute boredom.

The museum has several permanent and several temporary exhibitions. I liked the hall very much, dedicated to the history of how morality correlated with sex.

Very clearly, in photographs, the emancipation (fall?) Of society’s morals is shown - from a playfully sticking leg to the knee in a stocking from under a fluffy skirt to a pornoril with the participation of several men and women.

In general, as stated in the program of the museum, its mission is to educate the public, teach not to be shy and lead open discussions about sex and sexuality and help people get rid of self-censorship and negative stereotypes. The collection of the museum contains 15 of thousands of photographs, books, videos, costumes, various technical things and even art objects donated by modern artists. One of the main exhibits - inflatable figures from the usual sex shop. In my opinion, they are pretty ugly.

Of course, there are expositions dedicated to same-sex sex - otherwise there is no way in tolerant New York. An incredibly interesting exhibition of photographs of the famous secular photographer Bill Bernstein, dedicated to the disco era - in 1970, he shot in such famous clubs as Studio 54, Paradise Garage, Fire Ireland, as well as small discos in Brooklyn and Harlem. By the way, this exhibition is open to the public and admission is free!

But, despite the frivolous name and the same exhibits, in general, the museum makes a rather dull impression. Perhaps it is precisely because the creators of the museum were various scholars, the exhibits are arranged in strict conformity, and you feel that sex is prepared here, is the subject of study, and not at all pleasure. Such a serious, dried “instructions for use”, from which all human feelings and emotions are taken. In my opinion, the best that MoSex has to offer are humorous souvenirs.
