Moldova fears Russian aggression and intends to purchase modern air defense systems

Moldova said it needs a modernized air defense system to counter threats from Russia, which have intensified since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, reports “Voice of America".

Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean said this in a television interview three days after the country's parliament approved a new security strategy. It names Moscow as the biggest threat to the country's security and its pro-European government.

According to Recean, Moldova intends, with the help of its EU and NATO allies, to obtain a modern air defense system to protect its airports and large infrastructure facilities.

“If the Kremlin decides to attack us, what will we do? – Recan told TV8. “Neutrality will not protect Moldova.”

Moldova received EU candidate status last year. But Russia does not give up attempts to force it to turn away from the pro-Western path. For this purpose, gas blackmail, bribery of voters and financing of pro-Russian forces were used.

New strategy

“This strategy was a response to the dramatic change in the security situation in our region. The document identifies the main threats and proposes solutions to effectively counter them. Today we have two great threats to national security: the aggressive policy pursued by the Russian Federation against our country and against the world as a whole, and corruption that has taken root in Moldova,” said Moldovan President Maia Sandu.

The strategy focuses on strengthening ties with the European Union, neighboring Romania, the United States and NATO, reports Err. At the same time, the strategy emphasizes that Moldova must maintain its constitutionally neutral status and, unlike Ukraine, the country does not seek NATO membership.

The document says the new strategy “is critical in the current geopolitical context to limit the risks facing Moldova.”

“It is obvious that the Russian Federation will not abandon its hostile actions against Moldova in the near future,” the document says. “So we will have to learn to live in a protracted and intense hybrid war.”

The reaction of Russia

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the document, calling it Russophobic, and stated that Moscow has always respected the interests of Moldova. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in turn, ridiculed the European Union's decision to open accession talks between Ukraine and Moldova, saying that neither country meets the bloc's membership criteria.

Moldovan Foreign Ministry spokesman Igor Zakharov said Peskov's comments clearly indicate that Moldova is leaving Moscow's sphere of influence.

“We are decisively moving along the European path,” Zakharov told Radio Moldova. “This, of course, will cause discontent or even outrage among the Russian political class, but we have chosen this path and ask external forces to stay away from our internal decisions.”

The preparation of a new security strategy was initiated by Sandu and is designed for six years. The current national security strategy of Moldova was adopted in 2011.
