Three court cases were settled on Monday, February 26, in Brooklyn Federal Court, citing the NYPD's policy of photographing people wearing religious headdresses. Three women will receive $ 60 000 each.

One of the cases occurred in 2012, when a high school student, indicated in court documents as “GE”, was arrested after a fight with two other girls, who she believed were spreading gossip about her.

GE was taken to the local police station and forced to take off the hijab. GE refused and had to be sent to an isolated room where a policewoman could take a picture for the police database. According to the rules, men should not be present in this room.

But the Central Brooklyn police could not meet the religious needs of the girl, telling her that they do not have a female officer, and the camera is permanently fixed in one place, so the girl can not be sent to take a picture in a separate room.

The girl claimed that the male officer took her photo without the hijab, making her feel “naked, insulted and distraught,” because she had to stand without Islamic clothing for 20 minutes while the men and prisoners looked at her.

In March, 2015, the police issued a decree, according to a court statement, changing the policy on people wearing religious hats. The officers who carried out the arrest must now offer an alternative to those who wear a religious headdress - a photo in a closed room with an officer of the same sex.

Two other lawsuits were filed in 2015 and 2016 by GE lawyer, Tahani Abushi, and had a similar situation.

One woman claims that she had to take off her veil at the Brooklyn Central Police Station, and she was denied a photo with a female police officer.

Another victim said that the hijab was removed from her at the place of arrest.

Abushi said Daily News On Tuesday, that in December 2017, the police department issued additional rules regarding religious headgear.

“We did our best to set a good precedent,” Aboushi said. “On the one hand, it provides guidance to officers, and on the other, it protects religious freedom.”
