A ForumDaily journalist wrote a novel about the war and Russian dissidents: it is available in the Boris Akunin library

At the beginning of January this year, the Israeli publishing house "Book of Sepher» a book by Ksenia Kirillova, an expert of American think tanks, regular author and ForumDaily columnist, has been published. The novel takes place in the Serbian capital Belgrade, which has become a haven for many Russian dissidents, as well as in Russia and the Ukrainian Donbass, where battles continue to rage. At the time the story begins, the war has been going on for more than six months, grinding both weak-willed Russian conscripts and foreign mercenaries, including former Serbian Chetniks.

At the same time, the new emigrants are determined to continue their struggle in exile, particularly by conducting rather dangerous investigations into war criminals. Their allies turn out to be the most unexpected people - from wounded Ukrainian soldiers to Serbs ready to go against their former comrades.

«In addition to the fascinating spy plot, I tried to convey the key tragedies of our terrible era - the pain of post-traumatic stress in a former military man who is constantly haunted by the nightmares he has experienced; senseless deaths in the war and the breakdown of identification of the young emigrant Svetlana, whose fiancé ends up at the front against his will“, - Ksenia shares the details of the plot.

The painful contradictions between love and conscience seem to be happily resolved: Svetlana thinks that she and her beloved have been given a real chance to influence the situation from the inside. But won't the new opportunity turn out to be just an illusion and a dangerous trap behind which hides a new round of death and destruction?

Ksenia notes that the war really moves like a wheel through destinies and families, not only in Ukraine and Russia, but also in Serbia. When combined with espionage intrigues, these fault lines become even more dangerous.

«However, I still tried to give hope at the end that life still wins, and everyone has a chance to do the right thing in the end. Of course, this story is about the fact that the world is often not what it seems, and even a person seemingly on the other side of the barricades can turn out to be a true ally", the author emphasizes.

The new book is a kind of continuation of the previous novel by Ksenia Kirillova “Efron's mistake", also dedicated to the war. It shows from the inside the consciousness of a person who, understanding the true essence of everything that is happening, continues to work for Russia. The book also contains espionage operations, as well as scenes from Mariupol in the first months of the war.
