Donald Trump announced the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran, concluded in 2015 by the administration of Barack Obama. Trump for many years has consistently criticized the agreement - back in the 2016 year, being a presidential candidate, he promised to consider the possibility of canceling it if he won the election. Explaining the need to break the agreement, Trump accused Iran of illegally building ballistic missiles and using the funds obtained as a result of the lifting of sanctions to support terrorism.

Trump's decree on the resumption of sectoral sanctions against Iran, canceled at the conclusion of a nuclear deal, came into force. In particular, the ban on the purchase of Iranian oil again began to operate - countries that do this could fall under US secondary sanctions (exceptions were made for some states, including China, India and Japan). Trump called the sanctions "the strongest of those who have ever introduced the United States."

The White House announced the abolition of exemptions that allowed some countries to buy Iranian oil without the risk of being hit by secondary US sanctions.

Off the coast of the United Arab Emirates in the Persian Gulf, four oil tankers were subjected to a sabotage attack. As a result of the incident, no one died, no oil spill occurred. In the US, they unofficially talked about the possible involvement of Iran in the attack, in Tehran this was denied.

Two more tankers were attacked in the Gulf of Oman. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo officially blamed the attack on Iran, calling the incident part of an "escalation campaign." The Central Command of the US Armed Forces in support of this version published a video: it allegedly filmed on it, as the Iranian military removed an unexploded mine from one of the tankers. In Iran, the charges have been rejected.

Iran shot down an American drone. As stated in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), he violated the country's airspace. From the statements of representatives of the Pentagon, on the contrary, it followed that the drone was over neutral territory. After the incident, the US Federal Aviation Administration banned any American aircraft from flying over the Gulf of Oman and Persian Gulf.

Iranian officials told Reuters that Donald Trump, through intermediaries from Oman, conveyed a message to Tehran, in which he offered to start negotiations and warned about the "imminent attack" of the United States in case of refusal to do so. The New York Times reported that on the eve of Trump approved military strikes on several targets in Iran in response to the destruction of the drone, but at the last moment canceled them. The Iranian media published photos of the wreckage of the downed drone - the IRGC called the presence of debris proof that it was shot down over Iran, and not over neutral waters.
