There is an outbreak of whooping cough at a popular resort: 2 people died, more than 50 fell ill

In Greece, the incidence of whooping cough has increased sharply: two people died, including an infant, and more than 50 fell ill, reports ChronicleLive.

Whooping cough is called the 100-day cough because of its duration. Cases of the disease increased sharply in early 2024. The number of patients across Europe has reached its highest level in more than a decade.

Thousands of people flock to Greece every summer. The country has reported 54 cases of whooping cough this year. According to the National Public Health Organization (EODY), 32 children were infected, including 11 infants under one year of age, and 21 adolescents.

Unfortunately, two people died: an adult man with underlying health conditions and a newborn child.

Whooping cough is an acute microbial infection of the respiratory system. It is contagious, and the rate of secondary infection in infected individuals is 80%. Transmission from person to person occurs through airborne droplets or through direct contact with respiratory secretions of an infected person.

People with mild symptoms who are unaware that they are carrying the infection can also spread it. Although whooping cough can cause serious illness in people of all ages, it is more dangerous in infants.
