DPRK threatened to hit the US base on the island of Guam in response to Trump's threat

North Korea said on Wednesday it was considering a missile strike on the US-owned Pacific island of Guam, just hours after US President Donald Trump said Washington would respond with "fire and fury" to any threat from Pyongyang.

The sharp exacerbation of tension agitated the financial markets, while US officials and analysts warned of the danger of verbal exchanges with the DPRK.

Pyongyang said it was "carefully studying" a plan to launch a missile attack on Guam, home to about 163 people, and on a U.S. military base that includes a submarine squadron, an air base and a coast guard group.

A spokesman for the Korean People’s Army said in a statement that circulated the Korea Central Telegraph Agency that the plan would be put into effect if the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un approves a decision.

Guam’s Governor, Eddie Calvo, dismissed the threat from the DPRK and said that the island prepared by to “any possible events.” He said he was in contact with the White House and that the threat level had not changed.

North Korea also accused the United States of preparing for a “preventive war” and said in another statement that it was ready to respond to these plans with “all-out war, destroying all enemy strongholds, including the mainland United States.”

Washington warnedthat is ready, if necessary, to use force to stop North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs, but prefers global diplomatic measures, including sanctions. UN Security Council unanimously approved the the imposition of new sanctions on Pyongyang on Saturday.

Trump on Tuesday did DPRK is the sharpest warning.

“North Korea better stop threatening the United States. These threats will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen,” Trump said.

DPRK does not hide plans to develop a missile with a nuclear warhead capable of attacking the US, and ignores calls by the international community to stop nuclear and missile programs.

Pyongyang says intercontinental ballistic missiles are a legitimate defense against hostile U.S. actions, including joint military exercises with South Korea.

The US stock market ended Tuesday's trading in the red following Trump's comments, with the CBOE Volatility index, also called the "fear index", closing at its highest in about a month.

The dollar index declined, and the safe price strengthened against the dollar after the DPRK responded. Asian stock markets slipped, while the South Korean stock exchange index lost 0,9%, and the Japanese index Nikkei - 1,6%.

“Tensions will continue to escalate and could end up being a black swan event that markets are not prepared for,” said Johns Hopkins University professor Steve Hank.

The United States technically remains at war with North Korea since the days of the Korean conflict 1950-1953, which ended in a cease-fire rather than a peace treaty.
