Treasurer of the charity stole $ 400 000 donations to families of deceased NYPD officers
The former treasurer of a charitable organization helping the families of New York City police officers killed on duty allegedly stole more than 400 000 dollars from the organization to cover her son’s expenses as well as dental services rendered to her.
68-year-old Lorain Shenley was detained on the morning of March 21. According to investigators, she worked in a charitable organization for seven years and stole more than 20% of the donations she received, writes NBC.
The prosecuting US Attorney’s office in Manhattan did not indicate which charity organization was involved, but the website of the organization Survivors of the Shield, which provides assistance to the families of officers who died in the line of duty, says that Shanley is her treasurer.
According to prosecutors, the organization received about 1,9 million dollars in donations for the time of Shenley’s work in it, and 99% of these funds came from New York police officers.
In addition to working for a charitable organization, Lorraine Shenley is also on the board of trustees of the New York Police Museum.
According to prosecutors, Shengli was charged under one clause of aggravated fraud and one clause of theft under aggravating circumstances.
