Data card from fitness applications revealed addresses of secret US bases

Company StravaBy publishing a global map of the use of fitness gadgets and applications, it could accidentally disclose the locations of military bases and patrol routes of several armies in the world, experts say.

According to Air force, company card Stravalaunched in November 2017, covers the whole world. For its compilation, data from three billion fitness bracelets, smartphones and other gadgets were used, the company said.

However, military experts who studied the map began to sound the alarm: it turned out that Strava I used, among others, data from military fitness trackers on active duty.

As Nathan Ruser, an analyst at the Joint Institute for Conflict Analysis, wrote in a blog post, it “clearly shows the map position and structure of American bases.”

Indeed, in the countries of Africa or the Middle East, hundreds of kilometers from settlements and other fitness activity indicated on the map, one can see patterns left unknown from where the fitness trackers came from.

“If soldiers use a fitness app the same way as normal people, that is, turn it on and go for a run, this is especially dangerous,” Ruser writes.

At the same time, not only American bases and patrols are visible on the map, but also Russian and Turkish ones.

“Here you see the area of ​​Russian operations at the Khmeimim airbase, as well as the patrol route to the northeast,” the analyst writes.

Another analyst, Tobias Schneider, points out that the French tracker Madama in Niger is easily recognized by the track of a fitness tracker. Schneider also highlights the data Strava Outpost map around the Syrian Mosul.

According to analysts, the American bases in Syria provide the most traces of fitness activity. Russian give a little less, and Iranian bases on the map are almost absent.

None of the army involved in the Syrian conflict has yet commented on the findings of analysts.
