California will be even safer for irregular migrants
California Governor Jerry Brown has signed 10 bills to protect illegal migrants. Laws will take effect from January.
The SB54 bill hinders law enforcement cooperation with ICE immigration officers. However, state and local law enforcement agencies must notify ICE officers before releasing convicts for serious or violent crimes from custody.
It will also enter into force a law that prohibits the local police from checking the immigration status of persons under arrest, as well as transferring them to federal immigration authorities.
The law also requires prison officials to ask the prisoners for written consent before allowing federal immigration agents to interview them.
At the stage of reviewing bills, critics argued that this package of initiatives threatens Californians and billions of federal funding, allowing criminals to avoid deportation.
Brown also signed the AB450 bill, which allows employers to require a judicial warrant from ICE agents before allowing the Federal Migration Service staff to keep their employees confidential.
