JetBlu offered Americans $10 not to fly to Mexico
Passengers on a recent JetBlue flight were offered $10 to voluntarily give up their seat, but no one accepted the generous offer at first. Why did this happen and how much did the company end up paying? Independent.
Travelers on a JetBlue flight from the United States to Cancun, Mexico were stunned by an unusual request. The company offered a $10 loan in exchange for one of the passengers to vacate a seat.
One woman recorded it on a video that went viral on social media.
Tiktok user Jess Rice (@riesjess) uploaded a post that has already been viewed more than 10 million times. In the video, she filmed herself on the plane tired and upset.

Rice wrote: “We were supposed to go to Cancun, but we cannot fly out until at least one person gives up their seat. We are offered $10, but no one agrees.”
In one of two subsequent videos, Jess claimed that one of the passengers was able to negotiate a loan of $15.

In a recent post on the subject, Jess Rice reached out to commenters asking why she wouldn't take the money and fly on a later flight.
She explained her reasons for turning down the offer: “Nine people agreed and I'm sure they're happy. It was a flight credit, not real money, not cash. We were told the credit was only valid for JetBlue flights for one year. Considering JetBlue doesn't have flights to many destinations (they don't even fly from an airport near my house), it seemed unrealistic to spend $10 on JetBlue flights."

Jess Rice, she said, would have considered the offer if it had been made by another airline that flies more frequently to destinations in Europe.
"Also, I'm on a spring break trip with 30 of my friends and no one wanted to leave the group or cancel the trip," she explained, adding that flights to Cancun were fully booked for the rest of the week, meaning there were no there's no guarantee she'll be able to squeeze through to another flight.
Rice claimed that the reason for the need to free up space on board was because JetBlue had to transport crew members to Cancun to work on other flights.
“The fact is that the flights they were originally supposed to fly on were canceled due to a snow storm,” she said.
