Climate change will completely change the look of New York
A new report by the Association of Regional Plans notes that New York is not ready not only for a hurricane like Sandy in 2012, but also for rising ocean levels caused by climate change in the coming decades, writes Time-out.
The ocean is expected to rise by 60 cm over the next 30 years, which, according to the report, will result in about 10 thousands of homes in or around the three states being in or under the water. But this is only the tip of the iceberg. By 2050, almost 60% of energy production in the region will come from facilities that are in the flood zone.
According to the estimates of the Association of Regional Plans, the region needs a plan for building and upgrading infrastructure so that New York does not become a new Atlantis.
“What's the problem?” you ask. There appears to be no specific, coordinated effort or governing body that addresses this problem. This question should be of concern to any New Yorker who doesn't want the city to be underwater.
In its report, the Association of Regional Plans not only criticizes the state of New York’s infrastructure, but also offers several solutions to the problem. The organization says officials in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut should create a “Regional Coastal Commission” that will coordinate policies and projects to protect residents from the worst effects of climate change and recruit “State Targeted Auditors” to help pay for changes.
