From the American zoo, a lion escaped, ravaging the worker. VIDEO

A 22-year-old employee of the zoo in Burlington, North Carolina, died as a result of a lion attack. The predator got out of the closed enclosure and bit the girl who was cleaning up her usual shift.

The inconsolable family of intern Alexandra Black says the fresh-out-of-college girl died "because of her life's passion" - Alexandra had a deep love for predatory animals and enjoyed working with them, she writes. The Daily Mail.

The lion, named Matthai, escaped from his locked enclosure while a team of employees led by a caretaker was performing routine cleaning. The lion reached the people and “very quickly” killed Alexandra.

Relatives of the deceased issued a statement: “Our beautiful, smart, passionate about her work, Alex, worked for free at several enterprises related to animals. This was her fourth internship—she really wanted to make a career working with animals.”

Zoo officials said they had to shoot the lion after the deadly attack. At first they made several attempts to shoot tranquilizers at the predator so that the lion calmed down, but nothing came of it. Then the animal was killed in order to get the body of Black, tortured from the aviary.

Staff said the lion tended to be more timid than his siblings when visitors came near his enclosures, but he "enjoyed attention from those he knew well."

“He is a little nervous by nature, so he relies on cues from his bolder neighbors to decide how to respond to new experiences,” describes the lion’s personality on the zoo’s website.

The zoo center, founded in 1999, contains more than 80 20 animals of different species, including lions and tigers. Every year about 16 thousands of people come here for walking tours.

The center was created as an educational non-profit organization that accepts and cares for animals rescued from "unacceptable conditions."
