ICE unexpectedly brought hundreds of illegal immigrants to Texas, local authorities are at a loss

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Officers (ICE) have landed hundreds of illegal immigrants at a bus station in the center of El Paso (Texas), without notifying local officials, and hundreds more may arrive in the city in the coming days.

Representatives of El Paso in Congress and members of local charitable organizations said that ICE did not give the city authorities and charitable organizations time to prepare for working with immigrants. ICE, in turn, accused Congress of the need for sudden release of illegal immigrants, writes CBS News.

ICE sent 214 immigrants to El Paso on Sunday evening and around 200 during the day on Monday, due to which the Emergency Management and El Paso charities found it difficult to accommodate these people.

Officials and representatives of charitable organizations claim that the first group of illegal immigrants were taken to the city without warning. According to them, ICE has already done something like October 26.

Volunteers came to the bus station to distribute food and basic necessities to immigrants while measures were taken to transport them to another location.

Congressman Beto O'Rourke, a Democrat, said he was working to ensure that ICE warned local authorities about such actions at least a day, since at the moment there are no places in existing shelters for immigrants, and it’s not easy to settle them, especially that hundreds more illegal immigrants will arrive in the city in the coming days.

O'Rourke added that “ICE acknowledged that it had made a mistake”, without notifying local officials and charitable organizations about their plans so that they could prepare sleeping places, and not keep people in parks and parking lots without food and basic necessities.

Local officials condemned “ICE’s ignoring of the needs of defenseless people, including children,” calling such actions unacceptable.

In response, ICE blamed lawmakers.

“After decades of Congressional inaction, the government remains severely limited in its ability to detain and quickly deport families who have no legal reason to remain in the United States. To reduce the risk of families being held beyond the government's time limit to process them, ICE has reduced the time it takes to review post-release plans for families apprehended along the southwest border,” the agency said in a statement. The shortening of these sentences has led to the unexpected release of hundreds of people from ICE detention centers.

“ICE continues to work with local and state officials and charitable partners in the area and is available to assist with transportation or other services,” the statement said.
