Guests of the Olympics in Phenchkhane feed dog
Despite a warning from the government, almost all restaurants in Pkhenchkhan, South Korea, where the Winter Olympics are taking place, will continue to offer a controversial dog meat dish, writes Fox News.
From 12 restaurants serving dog meat, only two submitted to local authorities, who promised subsidies in exchange for this.
Eating dog meat is a normal practice in Korea and many parts of Asia, although many activists fight hard to ban the consumption of fatty red meat.
In addition, thousands of restaurants across the country serve Gaegogi, a delicacy eaten primarily by the elderly and believed to have restorative and healing properties.
In preparation for the Olympics and a large number of visitors, officials in Pyeongchang district spent millions of dollars trying to “westernize” the amenities in the area. This included the menu and rules in a foreign language in restaurants, cafes, canteens and kitchens, in addition to the request to stop serving dog meat.
But despite this, many business owners did not consider it necessary to change their menu only to accommodate foreigners.
“I have been selling dog meat for many years. It’s very difficult for me to change my menu just because of the Olympics,” says Park Young-ae, whose restaurant Young hoon located near the Olympic Stadium.
Pyeongchang district official Li Yong-bai told AFP that they faced criticism from those who regularly supply and use dog meat in cooking.
“We've seen a lot of complaints from restaurants that we're threatening to cut into their livelihoods,” he said.
The Olympic Organizing Committee 2018 of the year published the following statement in USA Today about this question:
“We are aware of the concerns of the international community regarding the consumption of dog meat in Korea. This is a question that the government must solve. We hope that this issue will not have an impact on the reputation of the games, and we will, as necessary, support the work of the district and the government on this topic. In addition, dog meat will not be served anywhere in the games. ”
The use of dog meat is common in some Asian countries, including South Korea and China, where it is legal. In many other countries, for example, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, Singapore, it is forbidden to kill dogs for food.
