The State Department wants to hire 1000 translators: how to apply

The US Department of State (DOS) wants to hire approximately 1000 translators and interpreters for government work, reports slator.

DOS will contract directly with each interpreter located in the United States to provide “oral, written, and related services in support of diplomatic and foreign policy activities at the highest levels of the U.S. Government.”

Regarding salary, notification The System for Award Management (SAM.gov) states that it can be as high as $150, with each project costing a maximum of $25 and most assignments paying $10 or less.

The salaries DOS pays are not publicly disclosed, but the notice says the department uses market research to set fixed rates for specific language services.

Requirements

If a call for applications is announced, only those who have already passed will be able to submit documents. examinations DOS Office of Language Services for oral and/or written translation skills in one or more foreign languages. These exams are offered by invitation only and are administered based on DOS needs.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and have a current Moderate or High-risk Public Trust Certification issued by Personnel Suitability and Security from DOS.

Once a contract is awarded, DOS does not guarantee the delivery of projects. To assign an individual translator or interpreter, internal staff consider assessed skills, previous work and availability.
