In 2020, the United States saw the biggest jump in homicide in more than a century, but some states saw the increase more than others.

The homicide rate in the United States increased significantly between 2019 and 2020, by 30%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There were 2020 murders per 7,8 in 100000, up from 6 murders per 100000 in 2019.

This is potentially the largest increase in homicide rates on record. The CDC figures are preliminary estimates and coincide with the official FBI crime statistics, which indicate a similar increase.

Experts are unsure what exactly led to the higher rate, although the social turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing economic collapse may have played a role.

Another possibility is an increase in gun owners in 2020: a record number of firearms were purchased in 2020, and according to the FBI, 77% of homicides in the past year were related to firearms. This figure has grown from 73% in 2019.

While there was a sharp rise in homicide rates in the U.S. between 2019 and 2020, the homicide rate itself was still lower than in previous decades, and did not exceed record highs in the 1970s and 1980s.

The states with the largest increase in homicides were Montana with an 84% increase, followed by South Dakota, Delaware and Kentucky. Only three states—Maine, New Mexico and Alaska—showed a decrease in homicide rates.

Data for Vermont and New Hampshire are not yet available.

Washington, D.C. had the highest homicide rate overall in 2020, with 100000 homicides recorded for every 24,4 people.

After the country's capital, the highest homicide rates were found in the southern states of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.

The state with the lowest murder rate is Maine (just 1,6 murders per 100 people), followed by Idaho and Massachusetts.
