For many people, groups promoting racial hatred are more abstract than a real physical threat. But their numbers are growing - both in the US and in Florida - and the riots in Charlottesville, Virginia, that left a woman dead and others injured, illustrate their destructive capabilities.

Florida ranks second in the largest number of such groups, second only to California. Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has identified 917 active hate groups throughout the country, 63 of which are located in the state of Florida.

The number of xenophobic groups operating in the country in the 2016 year remained at a historical level, increasing from 892 in the 2015 year to 917 last year, according to the latest SPLC calculation. These are only 100 organizations smaller than 1 018 in 2011, which was a record high in the last 30 years.

There is an anti-immigrant group in Winter Springs, the most extreme of hundreds of hate groups. They have spread since the late 1990s, when anti-immigration xenophobia began to rise to levels not seen in the United States since the 1920s.

The map was last updated in 2016 and is based on hate groups, civil and police reports, and news articles.

Part of the growth of hate groups is due to predictions that white people will no longer have majority status in the country by 2040.
